A seminar dedicated to the experience and prospects of using electrofishing and telemetry methods in scientific research in Uzbekistan

According to the Presidential Decree of the Republic of Uzbekistan, N. PD-44, dated December 10, 2021, "On additional measures for the further development of hydropower" at National Research University "TIIAME" there was organized a seminar-training on February 27, 2023, in cooperation with "Research Institute of Environment and Nature Conservation Technologies" under the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The topic of the seminar-training was "Electrofishing and telemetry" within HYDRO4-U project. The seminar could bring together 25 experts in the fields of ecology, fisheries and natural resources management from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Academy of sciences, National association of “Uzbekbalyk” to discuss the latest research and developments in the mentioned actual areas.

It is known that Electrofishing is a technique used to sample fish populations in streams and rivers. It involves the use of a specialized electric current to stun fish, making them easier to catch and study. Telemetry, on the other hand, is a method of tracking fish movements and behavior using electronic tags. Besides that there was an opportunity for speakers to discus the advantages and disadvantages of each method, as well as discussing different types of equipment and technologies. During the seminar-training there were listened to several different presentations about the latest research and applications of electrofishing and telemetry. Professor Bakhtiyor Karimov provided enough information about the use of electrofishing with the aim of assessing the impacts of small hydropower on fish populations in Uzbekistan and made a presention about the use of telemetry for tracking the movements of snowtrout in Shakhimardan river.

During the seminar-training, there was a lively discussion among the participants about the challenges and opportunities of using these techniques in different environments and contexts. The speakers and attendees also discussed the potential future directions for research and developments in this field. In brief, the seminar training brought an enormous experience in terms of giving opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders in the field of fisheries management to come together and share knowledge and exchaange ideas. The discussions and presentations highlighted the importance of electrofishing and telemetry in understanding and managing fish populations, and it was once again mentioned the importnace of continuation of research and innovation in the above-highlighted areas.
