”English Speaking Competition” at Professional Development Centre
It is important to suggest the adoption of Presidential Decree of the Republic of Uzbekistan, № PD-5117, dated May 19, 2021 "On measures to raise activities to promote the study of foreign languages to a qualitatively new level in Uzbekistan". In order to improve the language skills of young learners within the project “ English as a Medium of Instruction” with British Council on February 11, 2022 at Professional Development Centre (British Council & “TIIAME”NRU) there was organized ”English Speaking Competition”, where the 1-course students of “Organization and Management of Water Resources” took part. The competition was opened by the vice-rector on scientific and innovation activities Prof.Tokhir Sultonov, dean of “Organization and Management of Water Resources” faculty prof. Khakimov Rashid and head of “English Language” department Fayzullo Begov. In their speech, these leaders explained the importance of knowing foreign languages, which opens doors for the bright future, especially, for young learners.
It should be noted that the competition was conducted by a group of experienced teachers of “English language” department with the qualification gained within the years of teaching in higher education, such senior teachers as Maksuda Azizova, Marguba Khudaybergenova, Guzal Eshchanova, Bakhtigul Isakulova, Ulugbek Nullaev, Luiza Babakulova and Sarvinoz Ergasheva. According to the requirements of current national reforms, having international certificates for language teachers is not enough for being recognized as a qualified teacher by students, as it depends on a number of factors, primarily of which is being able to apply the advanced methodology and design teaching materials by taking into consideration the level of students and needs of educators in the learning environment.
The main aim was to pay a particular attention to the development of integrated skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing) step by step by implementing the internationally-recognized assessment approaches and creating good conditions for improving languages. With this in mind, trainers organized ”English Speaking Competition”, which included two-stages:
- Picture Description.
- IELTS Speaking cards.
The completion candidates demonstrated their creative skills in describing different pictures and tried to answer the IELTS speaking part questions. The candidates were assessed according to CEFR Speaking descriptors. We believe that such competitions will support students to develop their communicative-language abilities and assist in taking IELTS certificates in near future.
